An African Pontiff? Ghana's Cardinal Turkson says Church is ready

Catholic World News - February 13, 2013

Cardinal Peter Turkson, whose name is often mentioned among the likely candidates to succeed Pope Benedict XVI, has said that the Church is ready “and has forever been ready for a non-European Pope.”

Cardinal Turkson, a native of Ghana who now serves as president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, said that he would accept the papacy if he is elected, “if it’s the will of God.”

Some people just don't get it. It is of no importance what continent the pope is from. The cardinals, inasmuch as they let themselves be guided by the Holy Spirit, will choose someone who will forge job. There are no more Jews and Greeks.

Phil's comment has it exactly right -- Cardinal Turkson is now out of consideration. Surprising statement by him.
