Maronite patriarch travels to Syria, prays for peace

February 11, 2013

For the first time since 1943, a patriarch of the Maronite Catholic Church has traveled from Lebanon to Syria. Cardinal Béchara Boutros Raï visited a church in Damascus on February 9 and prayed for peace.

The prelate, who said he was moved by the sight of people fleeing Damascus, prayed “that the consciences of local, regional and international leaders are inspired to put an immediate end to the war in dear Syria ... and bring peace through dialogue.”

Bishops of three Eastern Catholic churches—Maronite, Melkite, and Syrian—as well as the Latin rite minister to Catholics in the war-torn nation.
