Papal greetings to celebration of 50th anniversary of Elysee Treaty

Pope Benedict XVI has sent his greetings to a conference organized by the French and German bishops’ conference to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Elysee Treaty, which marked the reconciliation of their two nations after World War II.
The papal greetings, conveyed in a message by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Secretary of State, acknowledged the Elysee Treaty as “an important milestone” in recent European history. The message also noted that the leaders of the two countries, Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer, joined at a Mass of reconciliation before the signing of the treaty.
The Pope promised his prayers for France and Germany, and for "God's protection and blessing for a future of peace and freedom in their own countries and throughout Europe."
