Lebanese prelate denounces governments supporting both sides of Syrian civil war

January 30, 2013

Maronite Catholic Patriarch Bechara Rai has charged that the governments who are arming both sides in Syria’s civil war bear a moral responsibility for the bloodshed.

The Lebanese prelate denounced the “evil work of incitement” being done by states that are providing military support for either the Syrian government or the country’s rebels. Both, he said, are complicit in the “crimes of murder, destruction, aggression and deportation of innocent citizens."

Patriarch Rai urged Lebanese political leaders not to allow the conflict in Syria to spill over into their country, creating new divisions. He urged the thousands of Syrian people who have sought refuge in Lebanon to show their gratitude toward their host country by adapting themselves to the Lebanese culture.
