Fiji expels Australian missionary priest

January 25, 2013

The government of Fiji has moved to expel an Australian Catholic priest who drew the wrath of Vorege Bainimarama, the acting head of the military regime.

Father Kevin Barr has been ordered to leave the country by January 27. A government spokesman said that the Australian priest, who has worked in Fiji for 32 years, had violated the terms of his work permit.

Father Barr had received a series of abusive personal messages from Bainimarama after he made statement criticizing the military government.
