Papal nuncio urges Irish leaders: maintain protection for unborn life

January 02, 2013

As he celebrated Mass for the World Day of Peace in Dublin, the Vatican’s representative said that 2013 will be a pivotal year “for the sanctity of human life in Ireland and in other nations as well.”

Archbishop Charles Brown was clearly referring to government plans to advance legislation allowing for legal abortion in Ireland. Quoting the World Day of Peace message by Pope Benedict XVI, the archbishop asked: “How could one claim to bring about peace, the integral development of peoples or even the protection of the environment without defending the life of those who are weakest, beginning with the unborn?”

Ireland’s President Michael Higgins was in the congregation for the January 1 Mass, along with representatives of the country’s political leadership.
