Italian Catholic weekly decries Berlusconi comeback attempt

December 12, 2012

The Italian Catholic weekly Famiglia Cristiana has decried the comeback plans of Silvio Berlusconi, describing the the country’s former prime minister as a “dinosaur” who would “throw the country into chaos” if he returned to power.

The Famiglia Cristiana editorial likened Berlusconi’s announcement that he would return to active political work to the allure of the Pied Piper. Berlusconi, the magazine said, was making “alluring promises” that would distract voters from the “virtuous path to reform—however unpopular.” The editorial said that Berlusconi’s return, after a series of scandals, would also detract from Italy’s international prestige.
