Catholic leaders support Palestinian bid for UN recognition

Catholic World News - November 29, 2012

Christian leaders in the Holy Land support a Palestine bid for UN recognition “in a unanimous manner,” a leading Catholic prelate reports.

Archbishop Maroun Laham, the patriarchal vicar for Jordan, told the Fides news service that “every step toward the recognition of a Palestinian state is a good thing.” The Catholic churches of the Holy Land have supported a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as has the Holy See.

Why don't these leaders address the reasons Israel opposes recognition of the Palestinian State? Israel wants a Palestinian state to agree that Israel has a right to exist. Palestinians refuse to make such an agreement. There are many other issues that also must be settled (e.g., borders, right of return, water rights). Israel is rightfully concerned that a Palestinian state will behave as Gaza is behaving.
