Times surprised by Cardinal Dolan's support for beatification of Dorothy Day

A New York Times report sees irony in the fact that Cardinal Timothy Dolan is promoting the cause for beatification of Dorothy Day, the founder of the Catholic worker.
The Times characterizes Cardinal Dolan as a conservative, while Day is regarded as a hero to many political liberals. The newspaper story does not touch on Day’s unmistakably Catholic outlook, marked by an intense devotion to the Eucharist.

Dorothy Day was one of the most vocal opponents of Social Security at the time of its passage. Like the Times, she believed the poor should be taken care of - but by civil society instead of government. Dorothy Day: "We believe that Social Security legislation, now billed as a great victory for the poor and for the worker, is a great defeat for Christianity. It is an acceptance of the idea of force and compulsion."

Typical of the NY Times to see everything Catholic-related through its narrow secularist political lens.
