Hong Kong diocese offers paternity leave, with or without marriage

Catholics in Hong Kong are at odds about a new diocesan employees giving 5 days of paternity leave to all employees, whether or not they are married when the child is born.

The policy—which matches the usual practice for secular employers in Hong Kong—is designed to encourage fathers to care for their children and the children’s mothers, since “love is above all virtues.” Critics complain that the policy seems to undermine the Church’s teaching on marriage.
