Catholic college cancels fellowship for dissident theologian

November 07, 2012

The University of San Diego has canceled a dissident British theologian’s two-month fellowship. Tina Beattie recently signed a letter in support of same-sex marriage.

“I hope you understand the difficulties associated with this decision, one to which I arrived with great and thoughtful consideration,” said Mary Lyons, the university’s president, in a letter to Beattie.

The university’s decision to cancel the fellowship has sparked complaints from 13 members of the theology and religious studies department, as well as from the American Association of University Professors.
