Australian parliament rejects same-sex marriage
CWN - September 20, 2012
Australian lawmakers have rejected a bid for legal recognition of same-sex marriage.
After a heated debate in the lower house of the Australian parliament, the vote was a resounding 98 to 42 against same-sex marriage.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard voted against the proposal, as did opposition leader Tony Abbott. The Labor government had given party members a free “conscience vote” on the issue; the opposition had opposed it.
