Orchestra from Middle East plans concert at papal residence
July 03, 2012
For the feast of St. Benedict, maestro Daniel Barenboim will conduct a concert by the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra at the summer residence of Pope Benedict XVI in Castel Gandolfo.
The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra brings together musicians from Spain and several countries in the Middle East: Israel, Syria, Palestine, Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon. The orchestra is making a summer tour to raise funds for educational projects in the Holy Land.
The July 11 concert will feature the works of Beethoven. Barenboim was the conductor at a performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, attended by Pope Benedict, on June 2 at the La Scala opera house in Milan.
