Australian archbishop urges political leaders to fulfill promise on marriage legislation
CWN - June 21, 2012
Archbishop Mark Coleridge of Brisbane, Australia, has challenged the Liberal National Party in Queensland to deliver on a campaign promise to repeal legislation offering civil partnerships.
"The Catholic Church is disturbed by anything that reduces traditional marriage to just one among a number of equally valid or invalid options,” the archbishop said. However he declined a suggestion to mount a major campaign to rally parishioners against a bid for approval of same-sex marriage, explaining that he thought lay Catholics were already strongly opposed to the move.
