Lawyer says Philadelphia archdiocesan leaders lied to him
CWN - May 14, 2012
A lawyer who represented the Philadelphia archdiocese has testified that senior Church officials lied to him about the presence of a list of priests who had been accused of sexual abuse.
In the trial of Msgr. William Lynn, attorney Tim Coyne said that aides to the late Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua had denied knowing the whereabouts of the list, although it had been shredded, apparently on the orders of the late cardinal. When a prosecuting attorney asked Coyne, “Everybody lied to you?” he replied simply, “That’s fair.”
Coyne was looking for the list in 2004, at a time when prosecutors were weighing criminal charges against archdiocesan leaders. One copy of the list, which had escaped shredding but was misplaced in a forgotten safe, emerged this year.
