Media fascinated by gun-loving cardinal
April 12, 2012
Italian newspapers are taking special interest in a ranking Vatican official’s collection of firearms.
Cardinal Domenico Calcagno, the president of the Administration of the Vatican Patrimony of the Apostolic See, owns a collection of hunting rifles, shotguns, and pistols. The weapons are not currently at the Vatican; they are kept in a locked gun safe in Savona, where Cardinal Calcagno served as bishop before his 2007 appointment to a Vatican post.
Although he enjoys hunting and shooting, the cardinal concedes that he enjoys the guns for themselves. "What I like above all is repairing weapons," he tells reporters.
