China's 'underground' Church celebrates Easter with caution; government ramps up pressure

Chinese Catholics of the “underground” Church celebrated Easter “very discreetly” as government officials stepped up a pressure campaign aiming to persuade underground Catholics to join forces with the “official” Church recognized by Beijing.
The new pressure on the “underground” Church has been seen by Chinese Catholics as a drive by Communist Party leaders in anticipation of the next Party Congress. The Chinese government has shown a pattern of crackdowns on Catholics before important Party sessions.
