Vatican preparing new document on right to water
CWN - March 15, 2012
Flaminia Giovanelli, the undersecretary of Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, has told Vatican Radio that the council is preparing a new document on the right to water.
“The right to food, like the right to water, has an important place within the pursuit of other rights, beginning with the fundamental right to life,” Pope Benedict taught in his 2009 encyclical Caritas in Veritate. “It is therefore necessary to cultivate a public conscience that considers food and access to water as universal rights of all human beings, without distinction or discrimination.”
The forthcoming document--“Water, an Essential Element for Life”--will examine “where we are with the question of water,” said Giovanelli. “There is a lot left to do even though there has been improvement especially in the sector of drinkable water.”
