Rector of Peru's pontifical university summoned to Rome to explain defiance

February 14, 2012

The rector of the Pontifical University of Peru has been summoned to Rome for a February 21 meeting with the Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.

In January, Cardinal Peter Erdo of Budapest ended an apostolic visit to Lima, reportedly concluding that the Pontifical University was adamant in refusing to acknowledge the authority of the Holy See. University officials have already refused to comply with Vatican directives to bring the school into compliance with Church guidelines, and have even defied an order from Peru’s secular courts to give the Archdiocese of Lima a seat on the institution’s board.

The university now risks being stripped of its status as a pontifical university. If the Vatican takes that action, the impact on the school would be enormous. The original donor who provided the land for the school stipulated that if the pontifical university is closed, the property would pass to the Lima archdiocese.
