Has Obama finally lost liberal Catholics' sympathies?
CWN - January 24, 2012
Wall Street Journal columnist William McGurn observes that President Barack Obama has finally managed to alienate some of the liberal Catholics who have supported him consistently in the past.
By refusing to recognize the conscience rights of Catholic institutions, and enforcing a blanket mandate for coverage of contraception and sterilization in health-care policies, the Obama administration has drawn the wrath of Catholics who have been sympathetic toward his policies in the past, McGurn reports, noting the examples of Cardinal Roger Mahony, Bishop Robert Lynch, and journalist Michael Sean Winters. The result could be open political warfare between the White House and the Catholic Church during an election year.
