Cardinal George meeting with Illinois Governor Quinn to discuss abortion advocacy
CWN - December 16, 2011
Chicago’s Cardinal Francis George was scheduled to meet privately with Illinois Governor Pat Quinn on Friday, December 16, to discuss the Catholic politician’s public stand in favor of legal abortion. Cardinal George has repeatedly warned Quinn that his support for abortion and for same-sex unions puts him at odds with Church teachings. In November the bishops of Illinois issued a public statement denouncing the governor for taking part in a Pro-Choice Leadership award ceremony. Such support for abortion, the bishops said, was “irreconcilable with any honest profession of the Catholic faith.” Cardinal George later backed away from that criticism of Quinn somewhat, when he learned that the governor was conferring an award on a woman who had worked to provide support for rape victims.
