Vatican newspaper reprints Ratzinger essay on divorce, remarriage, and Communion
CWN - November 30, 2011
The Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano has reprinted an essay on marriage and divorce, written by then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger in 1998, in response to public statements by the president of the German bishops’ conference on admitting divorced and remarried Catholics to Communion.
In September, Archbishop Robert Zollitsch of Freiburg said that the German hierarchy was discussing the Church’s teaching that Catholics who divorce and remarry must not receive the Eucharist. In a 1998 essay on that topic, the future Pontiff wrote that “in the end, only the truth can be pastoral.”
