October 24, 2011

Pope Benedict XVI has named the officers for the 13th general assembly of the Synod of Bishops, which will convene in October 2012 to discuss the New Evangelization.

Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington, DC, will be the relator general of the Synod. The task of the relator general is to introduce and synthesize the bishops' discussions, thus helping to guide the conversation and clarify the lines of thought.

Archbishop Pierre-Marie Carre of Montpellier, France, will be the special secretary for the Synod meeting. His tasks will include supervising the preparation of documents, providing public information, and finally editing the conclusions of the Synod.
