New apostolic nuncio to the US

October 19, 2011

Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, a veteran Vatican diplomat, has been named by Pope Benedict XVI as apostolic nuncio to the United States.

Archbishop Vigano, who had been the secretary of the Vatican city-state governorate, replaces the late Archbishop Pietro Sambi, who died in July after a brief illness. The new nuncio has previously served at Vatican missions in Iraq, Great Britain, the Council of Europe, and Nigeria.
