India: Church leaders denounce new plans to penalize large families

The Catholic Council of India has denounced a proposal to penalize large families, saying that it “violates basic human rights and is clearly anti-constitutional.”
The Catholic Council of India—a group composed of bishops, religious, and laity—responded angrily to a panel’s recommendations to curb population growth. Those recommendations included imprisonment for the expectant father of a 3rd child and laws making it punishable to advocate large families.
