USCCB spokesman compares Obama officials to Letterman, Leno

September 23, 2011

Sister Mary Ann Walsh, director of media relations for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, compares Obama administration officials in the Departments of Justice and Health and Human Services to late-night comedians who “feel free to diss the Church.”

Echoing the contents of Archbishop Timothy Dolan’s recent letter to President Barack Obama, Walsh writes that “the Justice Department simply writes off as bigots those with longstanding support for traditional marriage. And if the Justice Department gets its way in court, those considered bigots by the federal government will be marginalized with the full moral, economic and coercive power of the state.”

Comedians “may be playing for laughs, but it is something more when the government abandons its centuries-old truce with religion,” Walsh concludes. “Toying with freedom for religion bodes ill--not just for Catholics, but also for the Constitution and anyone who lives under it.”

WOW! Let's hear more from this clear-eyed straight-talking woman. And BTW, thanks for not kowtowing to the speech police by referring to her as a spokesman.
