Pope sees Lebanon as 'laboratory' for Middle East peace process

Lebanon's rich cultural history makes that country a "treasure," which should be "a laboratory in which to seek effective solutions to the conflicts that have long troubled the Middle East," Pope Benedict XVI said in a November 17 meeting with a new ambassador from that country to the Holy See. The Pontiff told the ambassador, Georges Chakib el Khoury, that "the Holy See always follows events in Lebanon very closely," paying special notice to peacemaking efforts. He expressed his hope that new elections and the formation of a national-unity government will help solidify Lebanon's stability and assure justice for all parties.
