Pope sees WYD as 'great gift,' announces themes for 2012 and 2013

August 24, 2011

Last week's World Youth Day in Madrid was "a stupendous manifestation of faith for Spain and for the whole world," Pope Benedict XVI told his Wednesday public audience on August 24.

Following his usual practice after a foreign voyage, the Pope devoted his weekly audience to reflections on the trip. The Pope said that he recalled his own experience in Madrid as a "great gift," and renewed his thanks to the organizers and his Spanish hosts.

Pope Benedict also announced the themes that he has chosen for the next two observances of World Youth Day:

  • In 2012, WYD will be celebrated in the world's dioceses on Palm Sunday. The theme will be: "Rejoice in the Lord always."
  • In 2013, an international celebration will be held in Rio de Janeiro, from July 23 to 28. The theme will be: "Go and make disciples of all nations."

Stupendous! Great word for the grace at WYD. Benedict seemed by his expression to recognize these young people as his own, the B16 generation. How happy and grateful he must be for the privilege of their love.
