Lay group lists 9 Boston priests accused of abuse

July 29, 2011

A lay group in Boston has released the names of 9 priests who have been accused of sexual abuse, protesting the failure of Cardinal Sean O’Malley to release a full list of accused clerics.

Complaining of “a silence of epic proportions,” BishopAccountability.org named 9 priests who were accused in lawsuits that were settled prior to 1980. In each case, the lawsuit ended with a settlement paid by the Boston archdiocese. None of the priests' names had previously been disclosed.

Groups representing abuse victims frequently claim that a full listing of accused priests is necessary in order to protect the public from predators. In this case, the disclosure of the priests’ names is not likely to have that effect. All 9 men are believed to be dead.
