Lutheran group's leader explains teaching that papacy is Antichrist

July 20, 2011

The president of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) has defended his group's official teaching that the papacy embodies the spirit of the Antichrist, insisting that the WELS is not anti-Catholic.

Rev. Mark Schroeder spoke out in response that has arisen over the WELS teaching, which came to light after Republican presidential candidate Michelle Bachman withdrew her membership in a church affiliated with the WELS.

Rev. Schroeder explained that while the WELS encourages friendship with Catholics, the group holds to the traditional Lutheran teaching that only the Bible conveys Christian truth with authority. Because the papacy claims to teach with authority, he said, "it put itself in a position of being anti- or in place of Christ."
