Bishop Finn fears Chinese economic power buys silence on campaign against Church

In a column written for the Catholic Key, Bishop Robert Finn of Kansas City, Missouri, expresses his concern that because the US has become heavily dependent on China in financial affairs, Americans may prefer not to notice--or, at least, not to respond to--the Chinese government's campaign against the Catholic Church:
At one time we might have insisted that China’s desires to be accepted and welcomed as a partner with the West must be met by an insistence that it respects this fundamental human right of religious expression and organization. Now we must be careful that our need to come, hat in hand, to China in the economic sphere doesn’t require us to be silent about such significant restraints on human dignity.

This really shoudln't surprise anyone. How long have we been ignoring China's many other human rights violations, such as forced abortions and sterilizations to enforce the one-child policy? We support the UN agencies that have cooperated with China, for years. Nope, no surprises here; it's consistent with standard communist behavior.

Of course, we Catholics contribute to that as well. Just look at much of the Catholic religious articles we buy -- turn them over and what do you see? "Made in China" I've always thought about the futility of protesting the Chinese government's actions against the Church when we're helping to finance that government by buying religious articles of a Church the government persecutes. If that doesn't make your head spin, I don't know what will.

You've probable been corrected by now, but I come from there (Kansas City, Kansas). Bishop Finn is bishop of Kansas City / St Joseph, MISSOURI. Archbishop Joseph Naumann leads the Kansas City, Kansas archdiocese.
