Filipino bishops returning SUVs donated by government charity office
July 13, 2011
Fulfilling a promise made by their episcopal conference, Catholic bishops in the Philippines have begun returning vehicles that they received as gifts from the government's Charity Sweepstakes office.
The Filipino bishops' conference has apologized for the bishops who accepts gifts from the government office, and said that they are prepared to face the consequences of their actions. Earlier, some of the bishops who had received gifts said that the donations were used for charitable purposes, and therefore not improper. Critics of the hierarchy have said that the gifts were signs of a cozy relationship between the bishops and the former government administration under former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
