Forced conversions to Hinduism in Orissa; most displaced Christians still in relief camps
November 11, 2008
Following a meeting yesterday with the chief government official of the eastern Indian state of Orissa, a delegation led by Archbishop Raphael Cheenath of Cuttack-Bhubaneshwar said that the majority of the 50,000 Christians who fled their homes remain in relief camps. Countering government claims that the situation in the district of Kandhamal has returned to normal, the delegation stated that Christians who have returned there are being forced to convert to Hinduism. In order to remain Christian, most who have left the camps are seeking housing in other parts of India. --
