Hospital chain refuses to cooperate with assisted suicide in state of Washington

November 10, 2008

Days after voters in the state of Washington approved a bill allowing doctors to assist their patients in suicide, the state's largest hospital system has announced that it "will not support physician-assisted suicide." Providence Health Care said that the decision "is grounded in our basic values of respect for the sacredness of life, compassionate care of dying and vulnerable persons, and respect for the integrity of medical, nursing, and allied health professions. We do not believe health care providers should ever be put in a position of aiding a patient in taking his or her own life.”

I’m happy to see these two articles on Authority. We don’t hear enough about the unique, and absolutely necessary, Authority of the Church. Without Authority, there is no ONE (cf. John 17; Ephesians 4:5; 1 Tim 3:15). Nothing sticks in the craw of Protestants (and of many Catholics) more than the big, scarlet “A” of Authority. The Authority of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Catholic Church.

Wonderful post expanding on the first! When my wife and I became Catholic in 2003, it was due in a very large degree to the authority principle, and the deeper we get into our Catholic journey, the more we treasure it and the more chaotic religious life is without it. During the first years of life as a Catholic, I discovered the short rule in a book by St. Josemaria Escriva, “With Peter, to Christ, through Mary”, and it provides sustenance still.
