Rhode Island bishop wants moratorium on illegal-immigration raids

August 22, 2008

Bishop Tobin argues that enforcement of immigration law has "divided the community, instilled fear in our streets, disrupted the everyday life of good people and separated family members, innocent of any crime, from one another." Joining with a number of pastors, the bishop says that enforcement should be suspended until immigration laws are reformed, implicitly questioning whether the existing law can be considered just.

The pastors urge immigration officials to consider conscientious objection, and ask the superiors to honor the wishes of those agents who do not wish to participate in raids.
