Cardinal Sean Brady of Armagh, the Primate of All Ireland, has accepted an invitation to attend the wedding of British Prince William to Kate Middleton. He will be the first Irish Catholic prelate ever to attend a royal wedding.
The invitation extended to Cardinal Brady may reflect the gratitude of the royal family for the Irish cardinal's efforts to bring peace on Northern Ireland. He tried to defuse sectarian sentiments by meeting with Protestant groups, and even with militant anti-Catholics like Rev. Ian Paisley. More recently Cardinal Brady has welcomed news of a forthcoming visit by Queen Elizabeth to Northern Ireland, saying that it will be "an important religious and civil event."
