Vatican Radio presents, from its archives, a description of the scene in St. Peter's Square on April 19, 2005. Cardinal Jorge Medina Estevez, the senior cardinal-deacon, appeared first on the balcony of the Vatican basilica to make the momentous announcement: Habemus Papam!

I remember where I was: just came out of a meeting and was supposed to meet colleagues for lunch. The news came across the radio, and I was so overcome, I forgot where everyone was meeting. I had wound up across town and had to call one of them by cell phone to get there. What a great day!
