Conservative Texas Baptists break away November 11, 1998

HOUSTON (CWNews.com) - A group of Southern Baptists opposed to the more liberals views of the Baptist General Convention of Texas broke away on Tuesday to form a new Baptist Convention in Texas.

The new Southern Baptists of Texas, initially consisting of 700 people, opposed the larger groups leanings toward acceptance of homosexuality and abortion. "I think we've got to get away from this thing of getting away from God's word," said Miles Seaborn, president of the new group. The final straw came for the conservatives on Monday when the convention approved a new representation formula that linked the number of convention delegates to church membership and donations to state causes, rather than just membership.

Conservatives contended the formula amounts to a tax that forces contributions to liberal-controlled programs and reduces their numbers at meetings. "Those of us who still believe the Bible is the word of God have been frustrated our money's been going to things" they believe contradict the Bible, said the Rev. Ron Eldred, pastor of Hitchcock Baptist Chapel in Hitchcock, west of Galveston.
