Holy See sets relations with Yemen October 12, 1998
VATICAN (CWNews.com) -- The Holy See has announced the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Republic of Yemen.
Yemen, created in 1990 by the unification of North and South Yemen, is situated at the south of the Arabian peninsula. The country has been under Islamic rule since the 7th century. There are only about 3,000 Catholics in the country, among a population of 15 million.
The brief announcement today, confirming the establishment of formal relations, indicated that the next step would be the designation of a papal nuncio for Yemen, and a Yemeni ambassador to the Holy See.
