Croatian Bishop Brutally Strangled June 05, 1996

ZAGREB, Croatia (CWN) - Retired Croatian Bishop Ivo Gugic was found brutally strangled Monday evening in the bishop's residence in Kotor, Montenegro, a province of remnant Yugoslavia, according to reports from Belgrade's apostolic nunciature.

The bishop's body was found around 7 pm Monday, and according to the police investigation, the murder happened around 5 pm. Police surmise that burglars entered the bishop's home, which contained a very valuable collection of art pieces, and strangled him with thick wire when he confronted them. There have been unofficial news reports that the murderer has been captured.

A funeral for Bishop Gugic will take place on Friday, June 7 in Dubrovnik, Croatia, and it is expected that all the Catholic bishops from the Yugoslav provinces of Serbia and Montenegro will participate.

Bishop Gugic was born in Vela Luka on the island of Korcula in Croatia in 1920. He was ordained to the priesthood in Dubrovnik in 1944, and became auxiliary bishop of Dubrovnik in 1961. In 1967 he was appointed to the position of auxiliary bishop of the Split-Makarska diocese, and then was appointed bishop of Kotor in 1983. He had served there until April of this year, when Monsignor Ilija Janjic was appointed the new bishop of Kotor.
