Archbishop Amato to head Vatican Congregation? July 07, 2008

A veteran Vatican official will soon be appointed as prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, according to a veteran Italian journalist.

Andrea Tornielli, the Vatican-watcher for Il Giornale, reports that Archbishop Angelo Amato, the secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, will be named to replace Cardinal José Saraiva Martins as prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. Tornielli says that the official announcement of his appointment will probably be made on July 9.

The Vatican has not commented on Tornielli's report. However, rumors have been circulating in Rome about the likely replacement of Cardinal Saraiva Martins, who at 76 is beyond the canonical retirement age, and has headed the congregation for 10 years. Archbishop Amato, a former assistant to the future Pope Benedict at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, has also been named frequently in stories about likely promotions within the Roman Curia.
