No Prada for the Pope June 27, 2008

Addressing an issue that has commanded an astonishing degree of attention from the secular media, the Vatican newspaper has reported that Pope Benedict XVI does not wear shoes designed by Prada.

Since he became Roman Pontiff, Benedict XVI has revived a number of Vatican traditions, including the wearing of red shoes that resemble the loafers produced by the fashionable designer. The idea that "the Pope wears Prada" sparked hundreds of newspaper headlines. But L'Osservatore Romano reveals that those stories are wrong.

The Pope is not interested in fashion statements, L'Osservatore says. The Vatican newspaper adds that the popular headlines about Prada shoes have conjured up an image that is "inconsistent with the simple and somber man" who occupies Peter's throne.

L'Osservatore reminds readers that on the day he was elected, and appeared before the faithful in St. Peter's Square for the first time as Benedict XVI, the Holy Father was captured by cameras raising his arms in blessing, so that his new white robes were pulled back to reveal the very ordinary black sweater that he wore into the conclave.
