Catholic bishop invited to Beijing Olympics opening ceremony June 09, 2008
The Chinese government has invited Hong Kong's coadjutor, Bishop John Tong Hon, to participate in opening ceremonies for the Olympic Games, the AsiaNews service reports.
Bishop Tong has accepted the invitation, saying that he would "attend this joyous national event as a witness." Vatican officials see the invitation as the latest in a series of minor goodwill gestures by the Beijing regime.
Perhaps significantly, the invitation to attend the Olympic ceremonies was not extended to Hong Kong's Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun, who has been critical of China's record on religious freedom.
