Salvadoran leader named for Path to Peace award June 03, 2008

El Salvador's President Elias Antonio Saca Gonzalez has been named this year's recipient of the Path to Peace award, an honor presented annually by the Vatican's envoy to the UN.

The award, recognizing leadership in world peacemaking activities, is given by the Path to Peace Foundation, which is closely associated with the Vatican delegation to the UN. Archbishop Celestino Migliore, the permanent representative of the Holy See at UN headquarters in New York, is president of the foundation.

The Salvadoran leader, who assumed his country's presidency in 2004, will be honored for his active participation in international peace efforts and especially for his decision "to trace out the map of poverty that identifies the areas of extreme poverty in order to work toward eradicating it," the Path to Peace Foundation announced.
