Chile Congress Approves Divorce Law September 10, 1997

SANTIAGO (CWN) - Chile's lower house of Congress voted on Tuesday to allow divorce for the first time in the majority Catholic country.

The law would amend the country's 113-year-old law regulating marriage to allow civil divorce, outside of the Church's provisions for annulment. "I'm sure it is a good law. It's passed the lower house and now it will go to the Senate, which will probably take it up next year," said Christian Democrat congressman Mariana Aylwin. The Christian Democrats are the biggest partner in the ruling center-left coalition.

The bill is the latest effort in a series of bills since 1990 that have tried to legalize divorce. The Chilean bishops' conference urged Çongress on Monday to protect society through valuing families and the role they play as the most basic unit of society.
