Sharing Good News is essence of Church mission, Pope says January 28, 2008

"The Kingdom of God-- the Kingdom of Heaven-- is near," Pope Benedict XVI said at his Angelus audience on Sunday, January 28. That simple message, he said, encapsulates the good news of the Gospel.

The Holy Father remarked that the public mission of Jesus Christ "essentially consisted in preaching the Kingdom of God and in healing the sick." By this means, he said, Christ brought the people of Israel to understand that the Kingdom was at hand.

Today, the Pope continued, the Church continues the Christ's mission to the world, with the help of the Holy Spirit, bringing physical and spiritual healing to the world and announcing that same good news.

Pope Benedict told the crowd in St. Peter's Square that at the time of Christ, the term "gospel" was used to describe any official announcement, such as a proclamation from the Roman emperor. "Thus," the Pope said, "applying this word to Jesus' preaching had a strong critical significance as if to say: God, not the emperor, is the Lord of the world and the true Gospel is that of Christ."
