German bishop vows a fight against bugging confessionals January 18, 2008

A German bishop has assailed the suggestion, raised by officials in the country's interior ministry, that police should be allowed to eavesdrop on confessionals.

Bishop Hans-Jochen Jaschke, an auxiliary of the Hamburg archdiocese, served notice that the Catholic Church will do everything possible to oppose the suggestion, which was raised this week.

The Social Democratic Party in Germany has announced that it also opposes the suggestion from the interior ministry.
