Devil still at work, exorcist reminds German magazine January 09, 2008
Father Gabriele Amorth, the exorcist of the Rome diocese, has reminded the faithful that Satan is real and active in the world.
In an interview with the German news magazine Der Spiegel, Father Amorth said that it is imprudent to neglect the effects of the devil. Satan is active, he said, even in locations known as Catholic sanctuaries, such as Fatima and Lourdes. Diabolical influence, he added, can even reach into the Vatican.
Father Amorth-- who has performed around 70,000 exorcisms and is the founder of the International Association of Exorcists-- joked that his words about Satan at the Vatican were not intended as a reference to the 35th General Congregation of the Jesuits, which opened yesterday.
In December the Roman exorcist stirred controversy by telling another interviewer, from the Petrus web site, that Pope Benedict will soon begin a new drive to combat demonic influence. "Thank God," Father Amorth told Petrus, "we have a Pope who has decided to confront the devil head-on." Vatican officials have denied that any new plans to combat Satanic influence are under consideration.
