Two Italian priests defy bishops on marriage issues December 10, 2007
An Italian priest who gained notoriety earlier this year by proclaiming his love for a local woman has now admitted that he is the father of the woman's child.
The former pastor of Monterosso, Italy, Father Sante Squotti, appeared on Italian television station Canale 5 declaring that he is the father of the 15-month old boy. Father Sguotti, who formerly said he did not know the mother of the child βin the biblical sense,β stated, βI am the father of Rocco and was present at his birth.β Father Squotti was suspended a divinis by Bishop Antonio Mattiazzo of Padua after he made public his romantic involvement.
In another disciplinary case involving a wayward Italian priest, the newspaper La Repubblica reports that in Piagge, Italy, Father Alessandro Santoro, has written to Cardinal Ennio Antonelli of Florence, informing him that in the spring he will preside over a church wedding for a 63-year old transsexual and her husband, who were married civilly in 1983. Yesterday, at the 11:00 a.m. Mass, Father Santoro asked his parishioners to support the transsexual and her husband as they prepare for their church wedding.
