Italian lawmaker angered by government bid for homosexual support December 10, 2007
An influential legislative member of Italy's ruling coalition has made public her dissatisfaction with the government, saying that she has "had enough of playing games with Catholic values."
Dr. Paola Binetti, a leader among the "teodem" legislators who support Church stands, revealed the strains within the government coalition in an interview with Il Giornale. Binetti, who has spoken in the past about her determination to uphold the principles of her Catholic faith, said bluntly: "I was betrayed by Prime Minister Romano Prodi."
The subject of Binetti's dissatisfaction was the government's sponsorship of legislation that would have barred discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Binetti voted against the measure, breaking with her party's leaders.
